Our History
Bedford Urban Garden has grown so much since 2014! We now have 42 raised gardening beds. We use 10 of these beds to grow healthy, organic vegetables to donate to the Bedford Christian Ministries food pantry and to John Early Apartments. We donated over 1525 pounds of organic produce in 2020. The remaining 32 beds are used for teaching and are available to rent for members of our community.
Thank you!
It is with gratitude that we acknowledge all of those who have made this a successful year at BUG. It takes many folks with big hearts and lots of gardening knowledge to plan, plant, harvest, and share in this work. The Board of Directors work behind the scenes and get their hands dirty to make it all come together. Dave McCormick, owner of The Lofts, donates the use of the land.
The garden was awarded a grant from Bedford Community Health Foundation which provided funds for lumber and organic soil to build more beds. Brown’s Construction of Virginia donated materials. The entire community came together and donated funds to hire a plumber and pay Bedford Regional Water Authority for a permanent source of water.
We have so much to be thankful for: funds, property, and materials donated, volunteers, bees doing their job, master gardeners sharing their skills, organic produce delivered to our tables. Relationships have been cultivated and connections with our neighbors built.
There are truly generous organizations, businesses, and wonderful people in our town.
